Stokvels Overview
Stokvels are traditional South African savings groups where members contribute regularly and take turns receiving payouts. This guide explains how stokvels work on Zeturi and what features are available.
What Is a Stokvel?
A stokvel is a savings club where members pool their money through regular contributions. The collective pot is then distributed to members either through rotation (taking turns) or proportionally based on contributions.
Key Characteristics
- Regular Contributions – Members contribute monthly or as agreed
- Collective Savings – Money pooled together
- Rotation or Proportional – Different distribution methods
- Trust-Based – Built on community and accountability
- Flexible Purpose – Savings, groceries, events, emergencies
Stokvels have been part of South African culture for over a century. Zeturi brings this tradition online with transparent tracking, automated calculations, and digital record-keeping while preserving the community spirit.
How Stokvels Work on Zeturi
1. Contributions
Members contribute regularly:
- Fixed amount per member (e.g., R500/month)
- Payment via EFT, PayShap, or cash deposit
- Automatic recording when Member ID used as reference
- Manual recording by treasurer if needed
2. Distribution Methods
Two main ways to distribute funds:
Rotational (Taking Turns)
- Each member gets the full pot in turn
- Fair rotation schedule managed automatically
- Example: 10 members × R500 = R5 000 per person per turn
Proportional (Based on Contributions)
- Distributions based on what you contributed
- Get back what you put in (plus interest if applicable)
- More flexible, no fixed schedule
3. Member Tracking
Each member has:
- Unique Member ID (e.g., ZET123456-007)
- Contribution history
- Current balance
- Rotation position (if rotational)
- Transaction records
Distribution Models
Rotational Stokvel

Common Questions
What's the difference between rotational and proportional?
Rotational: Everyone contributes the same, takes turns getting full pot. Proportional: Contributions can vary, distributions match what you put in.
Can I miss a contribution?
Depends on scheme rules. Some allow catch-up payments, others may skip your turn or reduce your payout. Contact your treasurer immediately if you'll miss a payment.
When do I get my payout?
Rotational: Check rotation schedule on dashboard. Proportional: When scheme decides to distribute (monthly, quarterly, annually).
Can I leave the stokvel?
Yes, but timing matters. In rotational stokvels, best to leave after receiving your turn. In proportional, you'll get your balance when you leave. Discuss with admin.
